NEA Jazz Master David Liebman presents “Earth,” the final work of a tetralogy he began in 1990s exploring the four natural elements in our universe. He recorded Water in the late ’90s with Pat Metheny; Air in 2006 with computer sound specialist Walter Quintus; and Fire last year with Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland and Kenny Werner. Earth will be recorded in this fall with the Dave Liebman Group. As with the other “elements” projects, one melody forms the basis for all the pieces, using each interval (2nds through 7ths) as the unifying force and musical premise for the compositions and the song titles celebrate the element of Earth in some of its real world manifestations: “The Sahara,” “Volcano/Avalanche,” “Mt Everest/Grand Canyon,” “Dust to Dust,” “Concrete Jungle,” and “Galaxy.” Downbeat says Liebman “is among the most important saxophonists in contemporary music…a leader and artist of integrity and independent direction.”
