Launching this year’s annual Coltrane Festival, COUNTDOWN 2019, is an outstanding quintet with Eddie Henderson, Eric Alexander, and George Cables. Henderson and Cables have been collaborating and making music history together since the 1970s and now two of the most beloved artists in jazz. Chicago Reader reports of Henderson, “His progressive, assured, and imaginative improvisations roll out in a glorious sun-splashed tone… he seems to dance through his solos, balancing his quick clockwork technique with bursts of bluesy soul,” while All About Jazz says of Cables, “Anyone who is serious about jazz will tell you that George Cables belongs in the pantheon of the greatest jazz pianists.” Joining these two esteemed artists is tenor saxophone titan Eric Alexander. Downbeat says, “Eric Alexander can play the tenor saxophone—never doubt that. He has the chops, power and passion that make him one of the most blazingly bad-assed saxophonists of his generation.” Completing this impressive group are two of the very best—bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth.
