This year’s final Festival Quintet is another crowd-pleaser featuring Steve Turre and Larry Willis. Turre is a jazz master whose illustrious career includes work alongside music legends such as Ray Charles, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and Woody Shaw and he is a 30+ year mainstay of the Saturday Night Live Band. On everything from swinging classic bop lines on trombone or conjuring Rahsaan on shells over a deep groove, Steve Turre is a true jazz original. Rolling Stone says, “The jazz world needs more Steve Turres.Piano legend Larry Willis has recorded over 300 albums working with people like Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Cannonball Adderley, Stan Getz, Art Blakey and was the pianist for the groundbreaking band Blood, Sweat and Tears for seven years. The New York Times reported that Willis plays with “the spareness and linearity of Bud Powell to the modernistic harmonies of Herbie Hancock.” This quintet also includes the phenomenal Eric Alexander and an unmatched rhythm section in bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth.
