Al Foster celebrates his 75th birthday in the company of this special quintet featuring trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and tenor saxophonist Dayna Stephens. Foster, whose transcendent grooves and rhythmic textures were the pulse of Miles Davis’ bands throughout the ’70s and ’80s, is known for making everyone around him sound better. In his autobiography, Miles related that he hired Al because, “he could set up shit for everyone else to play off and could keep the groove going forever.” Of course, his career has many other highlights including extensive work with Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Henderson. Sonny called Al “the last of the great living jazz drummers” and Henderson reportedly said Al was his favorite drummer, period.
