Trombonist Steve Davis celebrates the release of “Say When” his debut recording for Smoke Sessions Records, which features the music of J.J. Johnson. It’s been at least 20 years since he first had the idea to make this recording but after presenting some of this music that past two Novembers at Smoke, he realized that the time was right. Davis, like J.J., is a technical master whose playing navigates the challenges inherent in the language of bebop with seeming ease. JazzTimes says, “(Steve) has established himself as one of the most accomplished and lyrical improvisers on his instrument as well as a prolific composer. Downbeat says, “Davis thoughtfully balances modernism, lyricism and drive—as a writer and a player.” He will be in the company of an all-star sextet as he is on the recording that includes Eric Alexander and J.J.’s former pianist Harold Mabern with a special appearance by trumpeter Jim Rotondi.
