NEA Jazz Master David Liebman is “among the most important saxophonists in contemporary music…a leader and artist of integrity and independent direction,” states Downbeat. Considered a renaissance man in contemporary music with a career stretching nearly fifty years, his current group takes its cues from the younger generation and continues the time worn tradition of master/apprentice that he experienced in the 1970’s being a member of groups led by Elvin Jones and the legendary Miles Davis. By working with these younger musicians, he gains insight into the new directions that jazz has taken while offering these new artists his experience and knowledge. Conceptually, the repertoire traverses elements of free jazz along with re-arrangements of standards all infused with the complex time signatures and harmonies being explored by the musicians of our time. For this special performance, Liebman focuses on the legacy of his primary touchstone, the legendary John Coltrane.
