Azar Lawrence, a powerful and moving saxophonist, is one of the great interpreters of the music of John Coltrane. Jazz Times explains that “Although Lawrence is one of the most authentic of the Coltrane-influenced tenor players, he has, more than most, transformed the style into a uniquely personal expression.” Azar was featured throughout the 1970s by Coltrane associates Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner and Miles Davis and he also worked notably with Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Billy Higgins. Over the years, he wrote music for Stanley Turrentine and Earth, Wind and Fire and recorded with Roberta Flack and Marvin Gaye. The New York Times calls his playing “earthy and illuminated, propelled by a questing spirituality.”
