Carl Allen’s “The Art of Elvin” is dedicated to the music of two of his primary drum influences, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones. He started this project soon after the passing of Elvin Jones in 2004. Allen, an invaluable sideman and educator as well as a consummate drummer, has been at the center of the New York jazz scene since the early 1980s when he joined trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and served as his musical director for eight years. Since then, he worked with virtually everyone including Benny Golson, J.J. Johnson, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson and Branford Marsalis. The Washington Post says he “pushes his band mates to abandon their cool reserve so they can testify as if shouting out in church…” and Allen says, “My ultimate goal is to get to a level like Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Elvin Jones, and Billy Higgins… who every time they sit down behind a set of drums, it’s swinging….” And, he get to it, he does.
