Al Foster celebrates release of a highly anticipated new album, “Inspirations & Dedications.” He brings the quintet from the recording, which features trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, tenor saxophonist Dayna Stephens, pianist Adam Birnbaum, and bassist Doug Weiss. Foster is well known for his work with Miles Davis in the 1970s and ‘80s when his transcendent grooves and rhythmic textures were the pulse of these historic groups. In his autobiography, Miles said he hired Al because, “he could set up shit for everyone else to play off and could keep the groove going forever.” Miles is only a part of his incredible career, which includes extensive work with Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Henderson. Sonny called Al “the last of the great living jazz drummers” and Henderson reportedly said Al was his favorite drummer, period.
