Helen Sung, one of the brightest stars on the jazz scene, is a graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and a past winner of the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. Originally from Houston, Sung didn’t really discover jazz until college but she quickly found her calling. As Thomas Conrad described it in JazzTimes, “Sung earned a master’s degree in classical music before she found jazz, which she now plays with extravagant chops and the zeal of a late convert.” John Fordham of the Guardian adds that Sung complements “her lyricism, light touch, and classical polish” with “plenty of hard-chord muscle.” Her playing is consequently in great demand with artists like Ron Carter, Steve Turre, and Wayne Shorter and her most recent release, Anthem For A New Day, was a breakthrough showcase of her swinging style and funky intellect.
